Abstract

Mark Read Utility Subprogram is a technique for translating and rearranging source mark data (as read from a page/document mark reader) into a user-defined application data record. Each physical arrangement of marks which represent a specific result value for each possible valid combination of marks is defined as a mark-set. A user defines a rule for each type of mark-set for a document by recording attributes of the mark-set on a specification sheet.

Interpreting Mark Read Data

Mark Read Utility Subprogram is a technique for translating and rearranging source mark data (as read from a page/document mark reader) into a user- defined application data record. Each physical arrangement of marks which represent a specific result value for each possible valid combination of marks is defined as a mark-set. A user defines a rule for each type of mark-set for a document by recording attributes of the mark-set on a specification sheet.

The arrangement of the output data record, such as field location and composition thereof are defined using specifications. Source mark fields are codified by row-column coordinates.

Additional parameters through use of a specification define such attributes as document orientation, marks/line, and lines/document.

A system compiler interprets these specifications and creates a customized subprogram which is linked to the user's application problem program.
