Field Skipping Function

Improvement in "thru-put" of display data in an optical character reader is accomplished through the selective partial field skipping of non-vital information. This skipping function is reliant upon a fixed-field layout and control symbols for the skip, and is carried out through the recognition of a special symbol.

As shown in B, the characters are scanned from right to left and characters 1 and 2 in combination act as a coded control character to either read the line in its entirety or to activate field skipping a selected number of character spaces. If skipping is to be activated, latch 1 of A is set during the reading of character 2 thus forcing a "go left fast" and "blank". The high speed skip will continue until latch 6 resets which in turn resets latch 1. The character following the reset of latch 1 will be read normally. Blanking distance is defined during reading of character 2 by center scan, which sets the horizontal jump level trackhold which in turn controls the reset of latch 6.
