This description is directed to a ball typing element which can be utilized to provide an inexpensive high-resolution plotter for graphical displays at terminals.

The salient element is a ball-type printing element, which, by using the terminal backspace feature, will permit up to 15 characters (dots) to be printed in an area which normally accommodates only one character.

In considering this device, it is realized that, normally, about ten characters per inch can be printed horizontally across the paper on a terminal. The vertical spacing is either six characters per inch or eight characters per inch depending upon the ratchet associated with a terminal. For the terminal having a vertical spacing of six characters per inch, a 3 x 5 division of the typing area (with the capability of typing a dot in any of the resulting 15 locations) provides a plotting resolution corresponding to 30 characters per inch either horizontally or vertically.

Thus, there is provided a ball typing element which in addition to having all of the letters of the alphabet, and numbers, (a total of 36 characters), for labeling purposes, and special symbols for defining horizontal and vertical axes, etc. also has 15 dots disposed in chosen locations for plotting purposes.
