Applying Continuous Magnetic Stripe to Cardstock Web

Continuous stripes of magnetic material are applied across all or a portion of the width of a web of cardstock in a continuous high speed process.

In A, magnetic tape 1, comprising a thin magnetic coating on a polyester substrate, is pulled from free-turning brakable supply reel 2, over idler 3, into pot 4 of liquid water-based heat-setting adhesive, and around cylinder 5. Doctor blade 6 (enlarged in b) wipes excess adhesive from the coated side of 1 just before 1 contacts web 7 of cardstock and advances with it through the niP between cylinders 5,8. Meanwhile, 7 is pulled from free-turning brakable reel 9 around idlers 10,11, dancer roll 12, and idler 13 to the nip of 5,8. Juxtaposed webs 1,7 are pulled by and through compression rolls 14,15, through heater 16, around idlers 17,18 and through calendering rolls 19,20 and additional heaters 21 and/or 22 for sufficient drying. Then the polyester substrate of 1 is removed from composite web 1,7 by angularly disposed sharp knife 23. The substrate is sucked via tube 24 into bin 25, while the magnetically striped web is wound on reel 26.

Cylinders 5,8 should be smooth and chrome plated to minimize wear. Depth of channel 27 (see B) in 5 should be equal to the thickness of 1 plus that of the wet adhesive film applied. Width of 27 depends on width of stripe desired, not to exceed width of 7.
