Abstract

The method shown in the drawing may substantially reduce the amount of human error and time in replacing unit(s) (i.e. software modules) within a computer's software system, such as within an IBM OS/360 programming system for a particular computer installation. A particular installation's programming system usually comprises a library of system control programs in machine readable form resident on a disk device, and automatically callable into main memory for execution by the system.

Automated Replacement of System Software Units

The method shown in the drawing may substantially reduce the amount of human error and time in replacing unit(s) (i.e. software modules) within a computer's software system, such as within an IBM OS/360 programming system for a particular computer installation. A particular installation's programming system usually comprises a library of system control programs in machine readable form resident on a disk device, and automatically callable into main memory for execution by the system.

At times it is necessary to delete or replace a software unit or module, in order to change or correct a function in the programming system. A replacement unit is a new or modified software unit or module that is to replace a unit or module existing in the software system with the same machine-readable name. Programming fixes may be included as a change within any replacement unit. A general "replacement program" is provided which can be tailored into a particular "jobstream" which will, when executed against particular computer systems for which it is tailored, cause the named existing units to be replaced by the like- named replacement units. The jobstream is a collection of software operation system control statements and associated data which tailor a general replacement program into the particular "replacement program" needed to do the deletion and replacement within the particular installations programming system.
