Abstract

This is an improved compact dialyzer package which provides a mass-transport barrier of finite resistance for an artificial kidney machine. Flat, rectangular cellophane bag 1, with blood inlet tubulation 2 at one end and blood outlet tubulation 3 at the other end (drawing B), is wrapped around mandrel 4 in a spiral, interleaved with fiberglass screen mesh sheet 5 (drawing C). Sheet 5 is provided with spacer ribs 6. Dialysant inlet manifold 7 is mounted at the output end of bag 1, while dialysant outlet manifold 8 is mounted at the inlet end of bag 1. Blood enters bag 1 at inlet 2, where it flows as a thin sheet between the two walls of bag 1 and leaves bag 1 at tubulation 3. Dialysant fluid leaves manifold 7 and flows around and on both sides of bag 1 and is collected at manifold 8.
