Lid Assembly

This assembly is directed to a toner cartridge; more specifically to a plastic foam lid assembly for sealing off the cartridge to prevent leakage of the toner during shipping and handling. The lid assembly comprises a lid 1 made of high impact polystyrene with one end or flap 2 thereof formed 110 degrees to the top of the lid; a foam backing 3 secured to the underside of the lid; a chip board Instruction Card/Handle 4 which is secured to the top of the lid; and a strap 5.

After the cartridge 6 is filled with toner, the lid assembly is inserted into the slotted sides of the open end of the cartridge. When fully inserted, the foam is compressed to form a gasket-like seal for both sides and the rear of the cartridge. The front side of the cartridge is sealed by the flap 2. The tension of the flap against the cartridge front wall compresses the foam and prevents toner from leaking out. When the toner is to be used, the cartridge is inverted and inserted into the toner dispenser not shown. Then, the operator breaks the strap 5 and withdraws the lid assembly by pulling on the handle 4, thereby enabling the toner to fall into the dispenser.
