Edge Feed Transport System for Document Sorting and Stacking

An endless belt consists of a chain of rollers 40 which are linked together by links 43. The best is carried around a transport frame by tracks 41 and sprocket wheels 49. Mounting plates 55, each accommodating three document carriers 42, are connected to the belt. A plurality of these plates and document carriers 42 are attached to the belt.

Each carrier is equipped with spring clips 50 which serve to hold the documents in the carrier. As the carrier approaches a loading station, rollers 45 cause document clips 50 to be raised off the surface of carrier wall 44 to allow the document to be inserted. Documents of various dimensions are inserted one by one in a direction transverse to the belt movement and in parallel to carrier wall 44.

Carriers 42, once loaded, move over a series of unloading stations 70, one for each stacker. When a document arrives at an unloading station corresponding to a document's destination stacker, a carrier latch is tripped by a selector to allow the lower edge of the document to be engaged and withdrawn by rollers 100, 102 of unloading station 70.
