Document Card Stop Registration Device

The device moves and holds a document card 10 in registration with a card stop 12 without acting on the rear edge of the card.

Card 10 is propelled by any suitable propelling means between a pressure roll 14 and a reaction roll 16 toward card stop 12. Stop 12 is positioned at the end of a card passage 17. Stop 12 consists of a stop block 18 movably mounted on a flexure spring 20 so as to move in contact with the bottom plate 22. An electromagnet 23 is disposed within block 18 for clamping block 18 onto plate 22. Roll 16 has a rubber tire 24 fixed on its periphery and is rotatably mounted in a bearing 26 on a shaft 28 fixed to stationary supports 30 and 31. An inertia roll 32 is positioned on shaft 28. A one-way brake 34 between roll 32 and shaft 28 allows roll 32 to rotate in the direction of card motion but not in the reverse direction. When card 10 is stopped by stop 12, reaction roll 16 also stops but inertia roll 32 continues to rotate until its kinetic energy has been stored in torsion spring 36 connecting rolls 16 and 32. Spring 36 at this time exerts force through reaction roll 16 and tire 24 on the face of card 10, holding it in contact with stop block 18. One-way brake 34 prevents inertia roll 32 from reversing and unwinding torsion spring 36. Just prior to a release of stop 12, pressure roll 38 is dropped to grip card 10 between roll 38 and incrementer roll 40, so as to increment card 10 on release of stop 12. Forw...
