Flame Retardant Polyethylene

A filled flame retardant polyethylene polymer or copolymer resin material, to be used as an electrical insulation or encapsulant, exhibits superior electrical and mechanical properties, when formulated as follows.

The base polyethylene or polyethylene copolymer resin exhibits the following characteristics:
Base Resin
Weight Average Molecular Weight (Mw) range 60-250K optimum 120K

Mw* = Sigma(i)WiMi over Sigma(i) Wi

Number Average Molecular Weight (Mn) range 5-35K optimum 30K

Mn* = Sigma Wi over Sigma(i)Wi/Mi

Polydispersity (D) range 1.7-50 optimum 4.0

D = Mw over Mn *Mi and Wi are parameters obtained from a gel permeation chromatogram. The chromatogram is utilized to determined molecular weight (Mi) and weight fraction (Wi) of molecules in interval i.

To enable the above described base resin to be used in electrical components, it must meet Underwriters Laboratory flame retardant specifications. In addition to this requirement, the material must exhibit superior aging and mechanical properties. Hence, the base resin is combined with the following materials: % Additive by Weight
Antioxidant (Materials of the polyol type range 0.5-1.5 such as pentaerythritol or IONOL**) optimum 0.5 Flame retardant system antimony trioxide range 5-15 optimum 10 chlorinated hydrocarbon(s) range 7.5-20 optimum 10 (The chlorine containing hydrocarbon(s) must have a chlorine content DECHLORANE*** Plus and CERECLOR****P70 or a combination thereof.)
