Flat Coil Linear Motor

A design for a flat coil linear motor is shown in drawing A. The motor does not have a core; therefore there is no core saturation. Further, the major magnetic field generated by the coil is perpendicular to the access direction which is highly desirable.

Circular magnets 1 and 2 are used to provide a highly efficient magnetic circuit. The motor is designed to have two magnetic gaps, the flux variation along the gaps is such that the sum total is a constant, so that the force generated by the coil is a constant. With reference to drawing B, as the coil travels along the width of the two gaps, the total flux density of the two gap; is constant if the system is symmetrical about the YY axis. In such a case, the slope of the flux density vs. distance are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign. The design further allows the use of Alinco V or an electro-magnet in place of the magnet shown. A further advantage is that the motor can be simply cooled. Flux density in the gap in the range of 9,000 gauss to 20,000 gauss can be achieved, with proper design of the pole pieces.

Such a flat coil linear motor can be used for short strokes. The system is more suitable fur short-coil/long-gap combinations rather than long-coil/short-gap combinations, although it could be used in each application depending on the overall requirements.
