Abstract

A heat pipe is provided which transfers heat from one end thereof to a remote end. The heat is carried through the interior of the pipe in a vapor phase of a particular liquid. Once the condensation takes place at the remote end, the liquid is brought back in the liquid phase to the heat absorbing end.

Magnetic Wickless Heat Pipe

A heat pipe is provided which transfers heat from one end thereof to a remote end. The heat is carried through the interior of the pipe in a vapor phase of a particular liquid. Once the condensation takes place at the remote end, the liquid is brought back in the liquid phase to the heat absorbing end.

The arrangement shown has the heat entering the heat pipe through the wall of the left end of the pipe. This heat causes the fluid, which in this case is an electrically conducting liquid such as sodium, to boil. The vapors from the boiling fluid flow axially along the interior of the pipe towards the cooler end. This end acts as a condenser where the vapor is condensed into the liquid state on the cooled walls of the condenser and the liquid condensate is pumped back to the evaporator by an induced force. The induced force is due to the interaction of an applied magnetic and electric field. The induced force can be expressed mathematically as the vector cross product of the current density J and the magnetic flux density

The actual pumping force is controlled by the applied electric field in accordance with the heat load requirements for the required heat pipe operation. One important advantage of this heat pipe over the heat pipe containing a wick material is that this heat pipe operates regardless of the orientation and acceleration changes.
