Abstract

The drawing shows an orthoferrite platelet 2 that forms part of a character display system. Scratches 4 in the surface of platelet 2 form bar-shaped channels in which lineable domains are located. The channels are arranged for forming numerical characters. Near one end of each channel a dimple 5 is formed in the surface of the platelet. Each channel contains a magnetic bubble, and a coil, not shown, is provided for each channel for expanding the bubble to the shape of the channel or for contacting the bubble to a small region near a dimple 5.

The drawing shows an orthoferrite platelet 2 that forms part of a character display system. Scratches 4 in the surface of platelet 2 form bar-shaped channels in which lineable domains are located. Polarized light is transmitted through the platelet. Where a coil is energized, light transmitted through the platelet has its polarization shifted. Where the coil is not energized and in regions outside the channels, light is transmitted through the platelet with its original polarization. A polarizing filter blocks the light that is transmitted through the unmagnetized regions of the platelet. Light transmitted through a magnetized channel is transmitted through the polarizing filter to a screen to form the selected character.
