Abstract

This is a technique for precision grinding of small parts to assure concentricity of inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. A piece to be ground, part 1, is slip fit onto a lightly lubricated stationary carbide arbor 2 which is mounted on a cylindrical grinding machine through fixtures 3 and 4. A rubber drive wheel 5 brought into contact with part 1 transfers the turning motion of the machine work head to spin part 1 on the stationary arbor during the grinding cycle. Drive wheel 5 is coupled to the work head through flexible coupling 6. This technique affords production capabilities to concentricity within 0.0001'' TIR (total indicator reading).

Also shown is a part 10 comprised of three different O.D's, all ground by this technique to the same precision concentricity as the simple cylinder described above. In this case, however, a knurled driving adapter 11, lightly pressed onto temporary hub 12, is utilized to contact rubber drive wheel 13. To minimize driving pressure on the miniature male arbor 14, adapter 11 is located close to the female arbor 15. Part 10 spins freely on the lightly lubricated female and male arbors with a slight end play so that no torque is applied to the frail male arbor. After the grinding process is completed, part 10 is removed from the arbors, adapter 11 is pressed off the hub, and the hub is cut away at 16 to produce the desired part.
