Terminal With Line Hold Facility

This communication terminal includes a line-hold facility which prevents remote terminal time out, thereby providing time for necessary off line operations without encountering a line disconnect.

The communication terminal includes keyboard 11 and a medium reader 13 for providing information to buffer 15. When in a local mode, information in buffer 15 is supplied to printer 17 and the terminal control unit 19. When in a communicate mode, information received by receiver 21 is transferred to buffer 15 and then to printer 17 and terminal control 19. When not receiving, information in buffer 15 is also gated to transmitter 23 for transmission to a remote terminal. In order to provide operator time to properly set up printer 17 (eg supply paper, set tabs, etc.) and medium reader 13, a line-hold mode is provided. When in hold mode, idle codes are generated by idle generator 25 and provided to transmitter 23 to prevent remote terminal time out. When in this mode, information may be entered into buffer 15 in the same manner as when in local mode.
