Print Condensation on Proportional Spacing Typewriter

This proportional spacing typewriter, incorporating changeable type elements, has electronic logic associated therewith which allows type elements having condensed spacing to be utilized.

Characters keyed at keyboard 11 have their escapement value decoded by character decode 13. Escape decode 15 is responsive to mode selection switches 17 and 19 to subtract, respectively, one or two escapement units from the value transmitted by character decode 13 when the corresponding mode selection switch is actuated. The decoded escapement value is transferred to counter 21. After the selected character is printed by print element 23 under control of print control 25, clutch 27 is engaged causing lead screw 29 to rotate thereby effecting escapement of print element carrier 31. Emitter wheel 33 decrements escapement counter 21 with each unit of escapement of lead screw 29, until escape counter 21 reaches zero. Escape counter 21 then causes clutch 27 to disengage halting escapement. Depression of a character expand key on keyboard 11 causes character expand logic 35 to add a one unit of escapement to each character keyed and decoded by escape decode 15 regardless of the mode, N, N-1 or N-2 selected.
