Circuitry is shown for addressing and driving a matrix display apparatus 10 to operate the display as an oscilloscope.

A matrix display device is one wherein each point on the display surface is addressed by concurrent signals on individual lines representing the desired X, Y coordinates. As shown, the Y-axis 11 of the display is addressed by an analog- to-digital converter 12 and digital word to line output decoder 13. The X-axis 14 is similarly addressed by a digital counter 15 and decoder 16. The horizontal sweep rate is set by the signal on line 17 which sets divider 18 to the desired ratio of division of the pulse output of clock 19. An incoming analog signal to be displayed is supplied at line 20. The signal operates the analog-to-digital converter 12 and decoding circuit 13 to supply a signal on a Y-axis address line
11. The incoming signal is also supplied on line 21, setting latch 22 to enable counter 15 and gate the divider pulses thereto to begin stepping along the X-axis address lines 14.

Thus, the circuitry addresses those points of the matrix representing the time and voltage of the input signal. If the matrix elements are of the latchable type, the display could be retained indefinitely or reset for a new trace by a signal from the high-order X-axis line which is supplied on line 23.
