Background

      Laptop computer users demand increased battery life. Many solutions exist but none use heat conversion to electricity with a logical control-loop to the battery or the power supply.

      Air is heated when blown across a CPU heatsink. The heat energy is typically dissipated.

      Thermoelectric generation (TEG) modules use bismuth telluride-based semiconductors to convert heat energy to electricity. Two dissimilar metals are connected. One side of the converter is at a low temperature. The other side is at a high temperature. The temperature difference drives the resulting current. The generated voltage is always direct current (DC) and is proportional to the temperature difference. When connected to a variable-input DC/DC converter, stable voltage output can be achieved over a wide range of temperatures.

              Thermoelectric generators are comprised of an array of thermal couples that drive current using the difference in temperature between metals. They are connected to form an array of thermal couples driving current through a common wire. TEGs can be used like photovoltaics and can be connected to the same electrical hardware.
