Abstract

In a single operation, wire 1 is both bent into a U-shaped and cut to any predetermined length. As shown in Fig. A, the free end of wire 1 is held rigid by brake mechanism 2, and movable wire guide 3. A drive mechanism, not shown, moves bending die 4 forward causing wire guide to be displaced along wire 1, thus forcing the end of wire 1 through a tunnel in bending die 4, as shown in Fig. B. Clamp and cut bar 5 clamps the end of wire 1 as it emerges from die tunnel (Fig. C). Bending die 4 is driven in the reverse direction to draw wire from a supply, not shown, through wire guide 3 which moves with bending die 4 a portion of the return distance. Clamp and cut bar 5 is actuated to cut the loop from the strand, as shown in Fig. D.
