Mechanism for Positioning a Type Character on a Type Element

A type element, which is mounted for movement along a writing line and having a plurality of types arranged thereon, is rotated through a differential mechanism to position a selected type at the printing position.

The differential mechanism includes first gear 15 connected to type element 10 through rotatably supported shaft 14. Sector gear 17 meshes with gear 15 to rotate gear 15 in one direction in accordance with inputs to arm 18 on which sector gear 17 is mounted. Arm 18 is pivotally connected by pin 20 to link 21, which is pivotally mounted about the axis of gear 15, so that movements of link 21 change the position of pin 20. Pin 20 is the axis of rotation of sector gear 17 and is intermediate the sector gear and the input end of arm 18, to rotate gear 15 in the opposite direction.

The inputs to link 21 and arm 18 are supplied through separate lever arrangements 110 and 122, which may be actuated by a single driving means or by separate pneumatically controlled means.
