Automatic Generation of File Change Instructions

This is a program for automatically generating a set of instructions for updating a card deck or data file consisting of card images so as to make a new master deck or file.

The program generates a required set of update instructions by comparing a new master deck with an old deck or file image. All discrepancies noted in the comparison are utilized to generate deletions, additions and in-place changes.

Referring to Figs. A, B and C, there is shown flow charts which represent the program. The three charts form one complete program and have been shown as individual diagrams for simplicity in terms of showing branch points. Beginning with a completely sequenced file which contains a plurality of card images, the program performs a sequential comparison of the old seq. and a new master referred to as new seq. The sequential comparison continues until both the old seq. and the new seq. are exhausted. If in the comparison, the new and the old record are equal, the old rec. is used to make the new master. However, if the old seq. and new seq. are not equivalent, then a test is made to see which is greater and depending on the outcome, a command to either insert or replace the sequence number T will be made.
