Document Card Punch Unit

The punch unit controls the punching by a certain number of punches 10 for punching document cards 12, utilizing only half as many control magnets 9 as punches 10.

The punch unit comprises a certain number of punches 10 disposed in a row. Each of punches 10 is in axial alignment with an interposer 5, and a reciprocable bail 8 is adapted to engage each of the interposers to reciprocate the interposer and the corresponding punch. Interposers 5 may be moved into alignment with bail 8 by interposer links 3, and links 3 are swingably mounted by flexures 11 so that each link 3 can engage with two adjacent interposers 5. Links 3 are swung about flexures 11 by a sliding bar 1, follower bearing 2, return spring 4, and face cam 6. Bar 1 slides back and forth aligning links 3 with the even or odd numbered interposers 5. Bar 1 may align links 3 with odd numbered interposers 5, and magnets 9 may then be energized so as to drive interposers 5 into the line of travel of bail 8 by interposer links 3. Bail 8 then drives the odd punches 10 and returns to its bottom position. Bar 1 then reciprocates and aligns interposer links 3 with the even numbered interposers 5. Magnets 9 are then again energized to drive links 3 into the interposer 5 for the even numbered punches

The sequence of operation is as follows:.

1) At T25, punching has been completed for the previous column of punching in a document card 12 and incremental motion of card 12 starts.

2) T0, bail 8 starts upward motion.

3) T1, interposer shift bar 1 starts movement of interposer links 3 from alignment with even numbered interposers 5 toward the odd numbered interposers 5.

4) T2, bail 8 completes its upward stroke and starts its downward stroke.

5) T3, links 3 have completed shifting and are aligned with odd numbered interposers 5.

6) T4, bail 8 clears interposers 5.

7) T5, interposer magnets 9 are energized, driving interposers 5 into line of travel of bail...
