Quadruplex Magnetic Transfer Mirror Image Master Recording

This arrangement will produce a mirror image master magnetic tape for magnetic transfer without mechanical modifications and with but few electrical modifications to a standard quadruplex magnetic tape machine.

A standard video program recording made on a two-inch quadruplex machine corresponds to the desired finished copy 10. The video head motion is from the top of the tape to the bottom of the tape. Due to the horizontal motion of the tape the tracks have a slight angle. A mirror image of the video track is made simply by reversing the direction of rotation of the head wheel motor and the sequence of head switching. Video head motion is now from bottom to top of the tape--a mirror image of the video track only is now on the "mirror master" tape 20. Note, that the video track is now inverted with respect to the audio and control tracks.

To obtain a copy tape, the mirror master tape 20 is then placed in the copier as the "master tape". The copy coming through the magnetic transfer heads 22 is that of a video copy tape 30, however, the audio and control tracks are inadequately copied. The weak copies of these tracks are erased from the tape by an audio and control track erase head 24. The respective tracks on the mirror master tape 20 are adequate for translation.

The control track, which is still on the bottom of the mirror master tape 20, is moved to the top of the finished copy tape 10 with a definite...
