Corona Device for Suppressing Bead Carry Out

The developer station of an electrophotographic imaging system is shown.

A latent electrostatic image is produced on the surface of photoconductor 10, and this surface is moved in the direction of the arrow as a two-component developer material 12 is cascaded along the photoconductor surface to develop the electrostatic image. There is a tendency for carrier beads from the developer to stick to the photoconductor and be carried out of the developer station. The tendency of the carrier beads to stick to the photoconductor results from a number of factors within the development environment and these factors cannot be reliably controlled. The addition of corona device 14 at the upper end of the developer station provides a simple and effective method of positively preventing carrier bead carry-out, if it should tend to occur. The corona potential should be of a sign opposite the triboelectric sign of the carrier. The corona current is adjusted for a particular apparatus to a level sufficient to prevent bead carry-out, but less than the point where copy background starts to occur.
