Abstract

A graphic photocomposer employs a basic print element out of which all text characters, heading cuts, line drawings, and halftone photographs are constructed. Heading cuts and line drawings both consist of a black and white original with no gray tones which are to be reproduced as accurately as the basic print element size permits. This is done by scanning each element of the original art work, deciding if,it is white or black, and printing it that way. In the case of photographs, an area corresponding to the halftone mesh is scanned and the gray level determined. In printing, the gray level is simulated by using a dot made up of the proper number of basic print elements.

This is done by scanning each element of the original art work, deciding if,it is white or black, and printing it that way. In the case of photographs, an area corresponding to the halftone mesh is scanned and the gray level determined. In printing, the gray level is simulated by using a dot made up of the proper number of basic print elements. In halftone printings, the use of dots corresponding to white with some black elements and dots corresponding o black with some white elements gives better results than the use of solid black or white areas.

Obvious problems arise when the artwork is superimposed on the photographs and they are scanned together and printed as halftones. The artwork will be at the lower halftone resolution and it will not be solid white or black. In addition, there can be technical problems in preparing the superimposed originals for scanning, particularly if thin lines are required.
