Abstract

Failure to provide a means to identify a disk pack in an on-line status can lead to confusion. This is overcome by the device above. Described is a device to be mounted on or to be made a part of disk pack covers consisting of two parts: (1) Main body 9 housing ON/OFF switches 12 and 14; (2) Pack/drive ID T:AB10. The operating characteristics of the device form the nucleus of the identification system. The ID T:ABengages a cam 13 which, in turn, engages the ON/OFF switches: (a) T:ABinserted cam engages (pushes up) the OFF switch and releases (allows to retract) the ON switch; (b) :T:ABremoved - cam engages the ON switch and releases the OFF switch. Operation allows pack mounting only when T:ABis removed and allows pack dismounting only when T:ABis inserted. The T:ABserves a twofold purpose.

Disk Pack Disk Drive Identification

It actuates the device and serves as the pack identification for on-line use when placed into a holding fixture on the drive.

One embodiment is shown in Figs. A and B. Fig. A shows a cutaway front view of the device showing ON/OFF switch mechanisms 12, 14 and actuating cam 13 with ID T:AB10. As shown, pack handle 11 can only be turned clockwise (mounting). Pack handle 11 depresses the ON switch 12 in the clockwise direction but is stopped by the same switch if turned counterclockwise. Fig. B shows the device 11 with ID T:AB10 replaced. Handle 11 can only be turned counterclockwise (dismounting). The ID T:AB has forced cam 13 down which force...
