Abstract

The controlled fill and quick drain device 10 has a cavity 12 through which the fluid flow passes, as shown schematically in the figure. Arrow B indicates the direction of low-restriction flow. In this direction, the fluids see four convergent-divergent (low-energy loss configuration) passages. The pressure drop in this direction is very low and can be calculated from the acceleration of the fluid. In the direction indicated by arrow A, the fluid encounters a highly restrictive path. The fluid forms vortexes and only a portion of the fluid, as well as the associated vortex energy is transmitted to the next vortex area. Thus, there is considerable resistance to the flow of the fluid. The device is passive and provides approximately three times the flow resistance in one direction than in the other direction.
