Greater capability in information storage with improved discrimination is achieved by recording information in a reduced scale factor, and using phase rather than transmittance amplitude in the storage input plane to diffract light passing therethrough.

The storage and retrieval system shown utilizes an input plane 1 in which all information is stored in thickness and the reduced scale format; the thickness being a scalar function. Any desired information may be retrieved from the input plane 1 by inserting, in a manner to be described, desired search key information in a filter plane 3 located intermediate summing lens 2 and an inverse summing lens 4. A collimated beam 7a of coherent light is utilized to carry out a search operation. This beam 7a is formed from a laser beam 5a, issued from laser source 5, expanded by lens 6 and collimated by lens 7. The collimated beam 7a passes through the input plane 1, the lens 2 and 4, and the filter plane 3. When correlation is achieved between the search key and the desired information in the input plane 1, a spot of light is projected upon one of a plurality of detectors 8a suitably disposed in output plane 8. Placement of the key information in the filter plane 3 is accomplished as a preliminary step prior to carrying out the search.
