Abstract

Lamp 10 delivers light at one axial side of disc 11. As disc 11 rotates in the direction of arrow 12, each of the slots 13, 13a and 13b pass successively openings A, B, C, D and E. Fiber bundles from group A direct light to the first 16 read positions designated 17 at a card gap readhead position, where the card path passes intermediate reader housing portions 14 and 15 and from there to a series of 16 phototransistors. Fiber bundles from groups B, C, D and E, respectively, lead to second, third, fourth and fifth sets of 16 positions 18, 19, 20 and 21 and therefrom lead to the same series of 16 phototransistors. Accordingly, as each radial opening of disc 11 successively sweeps past housing openings A, B, C, D and E, 80 positions are sensed along the length of the read head using 16 phototransistors.

As a card 23 approaches the read head in parallel (in the direction of arrow
22), the slot 13a passing openings A through E by sensing light at all positions, performs a leading edge light check. Thereafter, the 12 data slots 13 in the disc perform a multiplexed read operation by each sweeping successively past the openings A through E, to read each of the twelve rows on the card. Finally, slot 13b passing successively openings A through E provides a trailing edge light check.
