Described is a method for reproduction of holographic or digital images by pressure contact printing onto another material, such as a deformable plastic film.

The typical high resolution image on a silver halide material such as microfilm Kodak 849 GH, or direct electron recording film, serves as the master for the reproduction process. The pertinent properties of the master, such as the degree of image relief and hydrophilic properties are controlled by the degree of development and composition of the emulsion (silver/gel ratio). The hydrophilic properties are controlled by the choice of kind of surface active agent at the last wash stage of the processed layer. While it is known that tanning development results in relief images, it was discovered that normal non-washout wet development of a silver halide film results in a preferential shrinkage as a function of the degree of exposure, sufficient also to act as a relief master, even though the gelatin base is not washed away.

The method of duplicating the relief image on the silver halide film master comprises bringing into intimate contact with the master a suitable thermoplastic transparent film on a suitable support such as glass, polycarbonate, MYLAR*, etc., under conditions of pressure and heat, wherein the contact time is such that the thermoplastic film is raised in temperature beyond its glass transition temperature.
