Abstract

A flexible membrane disk 10 is rotated by drive motor 14 about axis 12. Disk 10 is sealed between top cover 18 and back plate 16, and is held in position by the combination of centrifugal and aerodynamic forces. Head 26 is mounted on capstan 24 in back plate 16, the head protruding above back plate surface 22 so as to contact the bottom surface 20 of flexible disk 10. Capstan 26 is rotated by stepping motor 30 through approximately 60 degrees in 1.8 degree steps, as shown at 28, thereby accessing the head 26 to thirty-two tracks on disk 10. The read-write gap of head 26 varies slightly from normal to the track circumference, the associated signal being within 85% of maximum at the normal position.
