Abstract

An elastic diaphragm switch has a flexible sheet 1 which carries a pattern of copper lands 2. Electrical contact between the lands 2 and a conductive pattern 3 on substrate 4 is achieved by depressing the sheet 1 with a suitable actuator or an operator's finger. A separator 5 prevents inadvertent contact between the lands in the absence of substantial force on the flexible sheet 1.

Elastic Diaphragm Switch

An elastic diaphragm switch has a flexible sheet 1 which carries a pattern of copper lands 2. Electrical contact between the lands 2 and a conductive pattern 3 on substrate 4 is achieved by depressing the sheet 1 with a suitable actuator or an operator's finger. A separator 5 prevents inadvertent contact between the lands in the absence of substantial force on the flexible sheet 1.

The distortion of the diaphragm, due to the different characteristics between the sheet 1 and copper lands 2 tends to reduce the clearance between the lands 2 and the conductive pattern 3. This tendency can be counteracted by including additional lands 6, which bear directly against the separator 5 to move sheet 1 upward and prevent undesired contact. The additional lands can be fabricated at the same time as those required for normal operation and introduce no additional process steps.
