Abstract

Described is a configuration for a sixteen-segment printer in which the sixteen segments are arranged on the periphery of a rotating drum. The segment design was selected so that any given character in a full alphanumeric set could be printed in a single drum revolution, without requiring the consecutive selection of adjacent segments on the drum periphery. The arrangement of the sixteen segments is illustrated in the Figure. Each segment occupies its own arcuate position on the drum periphery. They are shown superimposed in the figure. Table 1 illustrates the segment positions on the drum consecutively numbered from one through sixteen, and the segments needed for composing each of the alphanumeric characters in the set.

It is obvious from the table that each of the characters can be made without utilizing adjacent segments on the drum. Thus, hammer bounce and the concomitant loss of a segment is eliminated as a problem and each of the characters can be printed within a single drum revolution.
