The playout of formatted columnar material is accomplished without the necessity of extensive calculations during recording with a system using an electronic tab rack, by defining a table mode, and keying tabs and variable space codes.

Tab positions are set and become part of the stored program where specific bits are used for denoting tab locations. With tab positions stored, the recording of material for later playout in different modes such as justify, flush left, flush right, etc., is accomplished by keying tabs and variable space codes. A variable space code is a code indicating that all normal spaces in a line or column entry will be treated as fixed, nonexpandable spaces and the entire residue will be absorbed by the variable space code. For example, having tabbed to the next tabular position and desiring to have the material flushed right, a variable space code is keyed followed by the keying of the text and a tab. For recording flush left material, a tab is keyed, the text is keyed, a variable space code is keyed and then another tab is keyed to position the carrier at the next tabular position. Text is centered by keying variable space codes before and after the text, and the absence of variable space codes within a tab field will result in justified text within the column.
