Abstract

A document aligner for conveying and aligning printed documents without smearing the printing consists of spherical ball 10 biased into cooperative feeding relationship with driven cupped roll 20 by cantilevered spring 3D. Ball 10 is free to rotate in retainer 15 to present minimum friction to the printing on document 25, as it is being aligned against aligning surface 26. The aligning force component in the direction of surface 26 is developed by lateral deflection of rotating cupped roll 20. The deflection of 20 is caused by the interference between it and ball 10. The aligning force can be varied by changing the amount of interference or the hardness of roll 20. Good results have been achieved with a 90 durometer urethane roll and a highly polished steel ball.
