Ribbonless Impact Printer

A cylinder with alphanumeric characters on its outer surface is made of porous material with a hollow center charged with an ink reservoir to permit ribbonless printing.

Cylinder 10 is fabricated from porous plastic or metal.

Characters to be printed are formed on the surface such as column 11.

The center of 10 is a hollow reservoir 12 filled with ink and sealed. The characters are printed on paper 15 by actuation of solenoid hammer 16 which forces 15 against raised characters 11. The charging of 12 with ink is performed in a vacuum process. If 10 is fabricated of stainless steel or the like, it can be recharged. Alternatively, 12 can be coupled to a separate ink reservoir to maintain its level, and ink feedthrough can be improved by introducing the ink to reservoir 12 under pressure and/or maintaining the environment externally to 10 under reduced pressure. When made of porous plastic, 10 can be thrown away after depletion of the ink in
12.
