Optical Code Generating Apparatus

This is an optical encoding apparatus where selected ones of a number of fixed light conducting parts are illuminated by movable independently selectable members.

Light from a source 10 and diffuser 11 impinges upon the bottom end of movable illuminating parts 12, and is transmitted throughout the length thereof and permitted to exit at variably spaced nonopaque areas 13, 13a. Parts 12 are arranged to pass through aligned apertures 11 in light conducting members 15, equally spaced by spacer members 23. Photosensitive devices 21 are positioned adjacent a surface of each light conducting member 15 and connectable through leads 22 to suitable registering equipment. Parts 12 are capable of assuming two definite positions; one active where the nonopaque areas 13 are within the light conduct members 15; and one inactive, where these areas are in the space between the light conducting members. Special patterns of opaque area positions along the length of parts 12 create output signal combinations representative for the respective parts.
