Magnetic Read/Write Head

A magnetic head for reading and writing information on tapes, discs, drums and the like is constructed of an inexpensive housing carrying a high-quality wear surface.

Pole pieces A are fixed in a jig, ground to desired dimensions and then encapsulated with a thermosetting or thermoplastic housing material such as synthetic organic resin. The encapsulation may be performed by seating the pole pieces for each housing in a mold using extra orientation tabs which are later removed. Two housings, molded spacers carrying pole pieces B, and a shield are fastened together prior to surface contour grinding. The surface of the head is plated using an electroless plating solution of copper, followed by conventional electrolytic plating of copper and chromium to form the wear surface.

Alternatively, each pair of pole pieces A and B can be separately encapsulated prior to head assembly and finishing as above.
