Abstract

Apparatus is shown for selectively retracting a continuous web from a moving surface. In a system such as an electrostatic printing system, it is desirable to retract the paper from the printing surface 20 when no image is present to be transferred to the paper. The paper comes into the transfer station through one side of paper tractor 9, passes beneath the transfer corona 11 where the print image is transferred to the paper, and out through the other side of tractor 9. The selective retracting of the paper is accomplished by providing a mounting for the paper guide on member 12, which is flexibly mounted by flex hinges 15 to provide selective operation of the retracting mechanism. Two solenoids 14 and 16 are provided to move members 10 and 12 between a retracted position and an operative position.

Flexible-path modifiers 18 are mounted between members 10 and 12 so that the motion of members 10 and 12 causes the path modifiers to bow outwardly, thereby changing the paper path to an extent sufficient for the paper to be moved from the printing surface. When solenoids 14, 16 are energized the paper is moved to the print-mode position (shown solid in the drawing) and when the solenoids are off the paper is moved to the stop-mode position (shown dotted in the drawing).
