Integral Throat Knife and Ramp

The throat knife and ramp includes individually fine blanked throat knife plate 10 and throat ramp plate 12 which are separately locally hardened and machined, and are then fixtured and welded together into an integral part.

Knife edge 14 of plate 10 is hardened and machined parallel to locating surfaces 16. Similarly, edge 18 of plate 12 is hardened and machined parallel to locating surfaces 20. Plates 10 and 12 are welded together so that surfaces 16 and 20 are parallel to each other, and so that throat gap 22 is a few thousandths inch greater than the desired gap. An adjusting screw 24 extends through plate 10 and is adjustably effective on throat knife 26. The desired operating gap 22 is obtained by advancing screw 24, causing throat knife 26 to deflect at weakened sections 28. The leading surfaces of document cards 30, in order to pass between and to be controlled by plates 10 and 12, locate against throat knife surface lOa and rest upon throat ramp surface 12a; and cards 30 are then separated and fed individually by passing through throat gap 22.
