Abstract

A mixture 10 of carrier beads and electroscopic toner powder is delivered to photocopy drum 11 by nozzle 12. An electrostatic latent image on drum 11 is erected by development electrode 13, which may either be grounded or biased to a polarity opposite the charge of the image on photocopy drum 11. Metering projection 14 limits the flow of developing mixture 10, to maintain free flow under the electrode 13. Electrode surface 15 is etched to a grid pattern to provide local charge concentration and to improve turbulence within the flowing mixture.

Supplemental nozzle 16, when in its full line position, supplies carrier material downstream of electrode 13 to scavenge excess toner from the image developed under the electrode 13. If the developed image is weak, nozzle 16 is moved to its broken line position to eliminate the scavenging operation.
