This description is directed to an arrangement for constructing a color image by generating three separate intensity images, one for each of the colors red, blue and green on the storage screen of a storage tube.

As shown in A, the three images are images I1, I2, and I3. These three images are disposed on the storage screen and are generated independently. Image I1 is the intensity image for all of the red color in the displayed picture, image I2 is the intensity image for all of the blue color, and image I3 is the intensity image for all of the green color.

The total color image is created by employing a spatial multiplexing technique to read the three images from the storage screen with a raster covering them, as shown in B. In this technique, as the reading beam reads a line from each color intensity image, the gun associated with the particular intensity image is employed to draw a color line on the raster on the color display device. There thereby results the drawing of three colored lines, viz., a red, a blue and a green line, on the color display device for each raster line read from the storage screen. Each line varies in intensity, corresponding to the intensity read from each color intensity image on the storage screen. A good quality color image is thereby generated, since the color display raster contains three times as many lines as were employed to read the image from the storage screen.
