Combination Rotating Card and Belt Machine

This apparatus enables handling of two types of media, belt or card for dictation or transcription.

Belt loading and phasing of the belt is essentially like that shown in J. Cater et al patent 3,588,119. By modifying the lead screw drive system to reverse the rotation of the lead screw 1, and providing a throat area 2 for the card 3 to enter, a card present switch 4, an idler capstan 5 for cards, a card deflect vane 6, a steel belt 7, and a motor reverse switch 9 for card eject, the apparatus shown in the patent is capable of handling both kinds of media. See Fig. 2 for belt handling.

To accommodate a card medium in the machine, the operator moves the medium control lever 12 to "card" position. Insertion of the card medium, magnetic side up, into the card throat area closes the card present switch 4, supplying current to the machine. The steel belt 7 with a stop pin and card pickup pin 8 starts to turn and picks up the card drawing it into the machine "card" area due to the positioning of the card deflect vane 6, which puts it into a belt form around the card idler 5 and drive capstan 11. (See Fig. 3). The card sensing switch 4 stays closed as long as a card is present.

The control area incorporates a medium control indicator which sets the machine up for the correct medium. Magnetic head 13 traverses in the opposite direction from belt reading for card reading. Recording time of the card medium is ten minutes at the sam...
