Adjustable Picker Knife Unit

This picker knife is selectively adjustable to feed cards or sets over a range of different thicknesses without stopping the picker knife.

Parallelogram-shaped elevator block 1 has a picker knife 2 attached to its inclined rear face to pick cards or card sets from the bottom of a hopper, not shown. Screw 3 passes with substantial radial clearance through bore 4 in block 1 to adjustably secure the block and knife between inclined faces of members 5,6. Rod;7 projects into a selectable notch 8a,b in a comb 9 secured to the underside of member 6. Hence, as rod 7 oscillates, picker knife unit 1,2,5,6,9 reciprocates in a path prescribed by laterally spaced dovetail slides 10 affixed to elevator plate 11; stroke length is greater for notch 8b than 8a.

The height of picker knife 2 can be adjusted, even as it reciprocates, by manually rotating shaft 12 to move lower inclined plane 13 toward the operator and thereby elevate an interlocked upper inclined plane 14 that supports plate
11. Dowel pins 15 project upwardly from base 16 into vertical bores in plate 11 to prevent lateral shifting of the plate and hence picker knife unit.

Dial 17 is preferably mounted on plate 11 calibrated to sense picker knife height via a spring-loaded plunger 18 that projects through the plate and contacts the upper surface of base 16. The position of knife 2 and block 1 relative to the remaining part 5,6,9 of the picker knife unit may be adjusted by loosening screw ...
