This is a system for automatic threading a leaderless end of a tape in a single capstan tape and read drive system.

The take-up reel 1 communicates with a vacuum plenum in back of the take- up reel by a series of strategically placed holes located in the plenum wall. The alignment of these holes with holes in the take-up reel occurs only when the take-up reel is in its innermost position toward the capstan. The holes in the take-up reel go through the rear flange, the reel hub and partially through the front flange. The reel flanges are undercut to allow evacuation of the air from the immediate area of the take-up reel hub. The vacuum in the plenum is supplied from a low-pressure cooling fan.

The air inlet to the housing chamber is located below the tangent point of the supply reel 2 and capstan 3. Capstan 3 fits closely to the housing chamber parts, thereby preventing direct short circuiting of the incoming air to the take-up reel. Supply reel 2 is against capstan 3, sealing off the flow of air in this direction.

As vacuum is applied to the vacuum plenum, the flow of air is around the outer periphery of the supply reel 2, across the tape guides 19 and 20, under read/write head 21, and to the surface of the take-up reel hub 1 where it finally enters the vacuum plenum.

During the threading cycle, supply reel 2 is driven by its periphery by capstan 3 in a counterclockwise direction. The tape end follows the curvature of the housing chamber, bein...
