Heated or cooled air is directed via ports in a hollow pressure roll through two superposed porous webs into ports in a back-up roll, to compress and bond the webs by sealing an adhesive preapplied to at least one of the webs at points aligned with the ports.

Two superposed webs 1a,b of cardstock, or the like, are advanced through the nip of identical rolls 2a,b. Each roll comprises an annular shell 3 rotatably mounted on stationary core 4 mounted on a stationary hollow shaft 5. Shaft 5 in roll 2a is selectively connectable to a source of hot air or cold air, not shown, whereas the shaft in 2b is preferably open to atmosphere. Preselected patterns of radial ports 6 are drilled in each roll 2a,b at and closely to either side of the nip. Similar patterns of ports 7 are provided in shells 3 and oriented so that at certain rotative positions the ports 7 in each roll will align with each other and with the ports 6. This alignment permits heated or cooled air to flow via shaft 5 in roll 2a through the webs 1a,b into shaft 5 in roll 2b, at the exact moment that related dot patterns of liquid or hot-melt adhesive on one or both of the adjacent surfaces of the webs align with the ports.
