Document hopper 3 includes end walls 4 and 5 with a flexure 6, that carries a seal pad 8, forming a portion or end wall 5. When flexure 6 is maintained coplanar with end wall 5, seal pad 8 closes the end 7 of air supply conduit 9. 7 branch conduit 10 leads into chamber 11 and thereafter to sensing device 12.

When the card deck within hopper 3 is below the end of flexure 6, the preload of the flexure moves the pad to a normal position away from the sealing position at the end 7 of conduit 9. The resulting static pressure in conduits 9 and 10, and accordingly that applied to sensing device 12, is reduced, whereupon a feed mechanism, not shown, is actuated to deliver additional cards to hopper 3. When the card deck in hopper 3 is high enough to engage flexure 6 and retain seal pad 8 against conduit outlet 7, sensing device 12 is subjected to an elevated static pressure. The feeding of additional cards to hopper 3 is thereupon terminated. Chamber 11 is placed in conduit 10, leading to sensing device 12, to provide damping action that prevents transient pressure changes of short duration from actuating sensing device 12.
