The adjustment of a typewriter type element relative to the platen to obtain the proper vertical print alignment while maintaining the desired free flight distance can be readily accomplished, by providing a slanted alignment slot in the carriage plate.

In the prior art as shown in Fig. 1, carriage plate 3 maintains shaft 12 of platen 2 relative to print element 1. When the free flight distance X is set, attempts to obtain the proper vertical print alignment through adjusting 1) clamping screw 6 having eccentric 8 fitted in slot 7 of carriage plate 3, and 2) screw 11 having eccentric 14 fitted in slot 10, result in platen 2 being rotated about pivot rod 13 which is freely movable in slot 5. Although freely movable, the relationship of slots 7 and 10 tends to effectively fix the position of rod 13. For example, adjustment of clamping screw 11 and eccentric 14 to move platen 2 vertically, will actually result in platen 2 moving through an arc about pivot rod 13 relative to print element 1, and the free flight distance X will be changed.

To overcome the above-mentioned problem, as shown in Fig. 2, carriage plate 3 is provided with a slanted slot 7 having eccentric 8 fitted therein and adjustable by adjusting screw 9.
