The annular shape permits a significantly larger solid angle for excitation and detection. This annular sealed radioisotopic X-ray source for radiation gauging applications, is both annular in shape and selectively transparent to photon radiation of interest. The annular shape permits a significantly larger solid angle for excitation and detection. The solid beryllium capsule serves as a combination low bremsstrahlung absorber for beta rays, a fluorescent X-ray window and a high-integrity seal.

The assembly, Fig. 1, includes capsule 1 of beryllium with a center hole 2. A concentric groove 3, Fig. 2, surrounds the center hole. A substrate 4 of tungsten provided with a recessed portion 5 is mounted within the concentric groove. The recessed portion of the substrate, as shown in the expanded view, contains the X-ray source consisting of a layer of promethium-147, indicated as 6, sandwiched between layers of copper 7 and 8. The assembly is held in place in the substrate 4 by an epoxy bead 9. A back cap 10 of beryllium is brazed or epoxied into the remaining portion of the groove to complete the assembly.
