Tape Transport

This is a tape drive for a magnetic tape transport of the reel-to-reel type. The tape drive provides a direct drive connection to the spool when it is taking up tape and a soft constant-torque drag on the spool when it is paying out tape.

The magnetic clutch 31, 34 forms a drive assembly 20. 31 is the drag member and 34 the driving member. A driven shaft 13 rotates within member 31 to drivingly engage tape spool 11. Member 34 is secured to one end of shaft 13. Drive shaft 24 is axially aligned with shaft 13. One-way clutch 35 is mounted on shaft 24 and connected to member 34 to permit free rotation of shaft 24 in a first or pay-out direction and driving rotation of shaft 24 in a second or take-up direction. One-way clutch 32 is mounted on stationary reference 33 and connected to member 31. Clutch 32 permits free rotation of member 31 in the second direction and locks member 31 from rotation in the first direction. With this arrangement, there is a direct-driving engagement between shafts 24 and 13 in the second direction and magnetic drag therebetween in the first direction. Pulley 36 and belt 22 interconnect shafts 24 of two tape drives. Pulley 36 is of smaller diameter than the hub of spool 11 to always permit free relative rotation between pulley 36 and spool 11, irrespective of the amount of tape 10 on spool
